ECOP – Landscape Ecology Lab

The forested territory is partially affected by a fire, with the right side completely scorched and the left side full of vegetation

Founded in 2024, the Landscape Ecology Lab follows a mission-oriented, problem-driven, and evidence-based approach to environmental challenges. It is a dynamic research hub dedicated to tackling urgent environmental challenges through the lens of landscape ecology and sustainable environmental planning. ECOP’s mission is to support evidence-based decision-making and policy development, fostering nature-based solutions that enhance climate resilience and landscape sustainability.

Integrating interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research, combining landscape ecology, fire science, and biological conservation, Landscape Ecology Lab‘s work is strategic and translational, bridging science, policy, and practice to develop nature-based solutions for sustainable land management.

This research’s group envision a future where landscapes are resilient, ecologically balanced, and adaptive to change, ensuring a harmonious coexistence between nature and society. Through scientific innovation and strategic planning, we aim to shape sustainable land management practices that benefit both ecosystems and communities.

Research Lines

  • Fire ecology and adaptive management – Investigating fire regimes, integrated fire management, and fire-smart landscapes to enhance ecosystem resilience.
  • Land-use change and ecosystem dynamics – Assessing how land-use policies shape biodiversity and ecosystem services and landscape resilience.
  • Climate change and Nature-based solutions – Developing stragegies to mitigate climate-driven disturbances and promote ecosystem adaptation.
  • Biodiversity conservation and ecosystem services – Monitoring and assessing biodiversity dynamics and ecosystem functions to support long-term conservation planning.
  • Technological innovation and strategic planning – Leveraging Earth observation data, remote sensing technologies, advanced ecological modelling, optimization tools, and AI-driven analytics to support evidence-based decision-making.
